Make
sure you have run spell and grammar check on your
resume. After you have done this, make sure
to have an independent person proof read your resume.
The fastest way to get your resume in the "circular
file" is to have a resume laden with spelling
mistakes.
-
The
information on your resume should be clear
and concise. Listing the company name, address,
job title, and list of duties and accomplishments
should be included. Dates of employment are
vital to show work longevity and stability.
-
The
margins on your resume should be equal all around
the page. This provides symmetry and is appealing
to the eye. A resume can be more than one
page, but normally no more than two. If your
experience warrants more than a one page resume,
then by all means use two. A one page resume
with an extensive work history sometimes sells you
short and does not showcase all of your abilities.
Make sure each page is numbered and is bound with
a paper clip or staple, so they don't get separated.
-
Pertinent
personal data (name, address, zip code, and personal
phone number) should be on every page.
-
Use
a heavier bond paper. By using a nice resume
stock paper your resume will feel different.
Setting it apart from all the other resumes in the
stack. Do not use paper with graphics on it.
Resume paper in bright white or cream is always
acceptable.
-
Job
description for past job should be written in past
tense: i.e. Supervised 10 employees, Facilitited
resume workshops, etc. If you are currently
still on a job it may be written in the present
tense.
-
Use
action words. Make sure your sentences begin with
or contain, whenever possible, powerful action words.
See list.
-
Keep
information relevant to the job you are seeking.
